The Anthroposophic Medicine Education Program
A Pathway of Development and Lifelong Learning
A continuously offered three-year curriculum that transforms how you understand the human being, illness, and healing.
Designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other licensed prescribers, the Anthroposophic Medicine Education Program combines in-person events, live webinars, group mentoring, and independent study into a flexible and ongoing educational journey.
The pathway is built around a continuously offered three-year curriculum. Participants may enter at any point in the annual curriculum cycle, complete all three curriculum themes over time, earn Continuing Medical Education (CME/CE) credits throughout the program, and, if desired, pursue certification through the Physicians' Association for Anthroposophic Medicine
Core learning components
Immersive In-Person Events
Experience two multi-day events each year— the Fall Retreat and Summer Intensive—combining time in nature, small group work, artistic activities, practicums, and self-reflection in an environment designed for inspiration and renewal. Engage in movement, observation, and other experiential activities that cultivate new ways of perceiving the human being and deepen clinical understanding.
Prescribing Webinars
Continue your learning between events through live webinars on common illnesses with case discussion and interactive sessions that connect concepts directly to everyday practice.
Online Group Mentoring
Observe Anthroposophic diagnosis and medicines in action, gaining practical insight into how therapeutic principles are applied in clinical care.
Independent Reading & Study
Build a strong foundation through curated readings and self-directed study that reinforce course themes and encourage reflective learning.
Clinical Mentorship
For those who have attended at least one in-person event and are able to treat patients clinically with anthroposophic medicines and therapies, the Clinical Mentoring Program is a wonderful way to deepen your understanding, support your clinical development, and integrate Anthroposophic Medicine into practice.
Community of Peers & Colleagues
Become part of a supportive learning community through virtual Monthly Member Gatherings and the online PAAM Member Community through the Anthromed platform— where ideas are shared, professional relationships grow, and learning continues long after each course concludes.
Flexible Entry
Begin wherever the curriculum is
Unlike a traditional three-year program with a fixed beginning, the AM Education Program is designed for busy healthcare professionals.
The curriculum is offered continuously in a three-year cycle, allowing participants to begin with whichever curriculum theme is currently being offered. As each annual theme repeats, participants simply continue through the remaining themes until they have completed the full program.
This means you never have to wait for the "first year" to begin—you can start your educational journey whenever you're ready.
The Learning Journey
Immersion, clinical application, and integration
Each year begins with a multi-day Fall Retreat that serves as the gateway into that year's curriculum theme.
These retreats focus on experiential learning with minimal lecture time. Instead, short “seed talks” introduce a theme and are followed by time for reflection, discussion, observation exercises, artistic activities, small group study, and meaningful conversations with faculty and colleagues. The retreats facilitate the development of clinical skills and perceptual capacities that create the foundation for the year's learning while building lasting professional relationships within the Anthroposophic Medicine community.
Following the retreat, participants can continue learning throughout the year through live webinars, online group mentoring, independent study, and clinical mentorship.
Each year's learning culminates in a Summer Intensive—an immersive experience that may take the form of an interdisciplinary conference, medicinal plant workshop, or other experiential gathering designed to deepen and integrate the year's learning.
The following fall introduces the next curriculum theme, continuing the pathway until all three themes have been completed.
Continuing medical education
-
Many in-person events, webinars, online courses, and other activities within the Education Program provide meaningful opportunities for reflection.
Eligible participants may use these learning experiences as the basis for completing the separately certified Reflective Practice activity in Learner+. CME/CE credit is awarded for the participant’s completed reflection—not for attendance at a PAAM event or for PAAM’s educational content.
Through Learner+, participants may earn credit while deepening their understanding of Anthroposophic Medicine, expanding their clinical perspective, and considering how their learning applies in practice.
-
Certification is available through PAAM for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists and pharmacists who wish to demonstrate advanced competency in Anthroposophic Medicine. Certification for NDs is available through SPAN.
Completion of the AM Education Program and the Clinical Mentoring Program fulfill the training requirements for certification, while additional requirements include written case studies and independent work. Certification connects providers with an internationally recognized community of Anthroposophic physicians and healthcare practitioners.
Learn About Certification
Education Outcomes
Establish a doctor-patient relationship based on observation and dialogue, in which you perceive the patient as an individual in a process of ongoing development
Take into account the spiritual dimension of the human being in the treatment plan and where appropriate, be able to discuss this with the patient
Establish a differentiated evaluation of the threefold and fourfold aspects of the patient, e.g. structural, physiological, emotional, and individual dimensions (also called the human fourfold nature)
Treat common diseases differently by including Anthroposophic findings, assessment, and/or treatment into your practice and adapt these over the course of illness
Develop a living connection with nature, as well as with the substances that are unique to Anthroposophic medicine
Understand the scientific foundations and research methods of Anthroposophic Medicine and independently search the Anthroposophic-medical literature
The Three Curriculum Themes
Tria Principia
Rediscovering the Wisdom of the Body
Explore the threefold organization of the human being as a practical framework for clinical observation. Learn how the dynamic relationships between the nerve-sense, rhythmic, and metabolic-limb systems provide new perspectives on physiology, illness, and therapeutic intervention.
Representative topics include Headache, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Insomnia, Asthma & Eczema, Food allergies, and ADHD.
The Four Elements
Uncovering the Secrets of Nature
Build upon the threefold perspective by exploring the physical body, etheric body, astral body, and I-organization as practical clinical realities. Learn how this expanded understanding informs diagnosis, individualized treatment, and the physician-patient relationship.
Representative topics include fever & acute inflammation, chronic inflammation & autoimmune disease, cancer prevention, urinary tract disorders, diabetes & metabolic syndrome, and depression.
The Cosmic Human Being
Reclaiming our Wholeness
Integrate the broader relationships between the human being and the world, including growth & development, individual biography, the influence of the planets and fixed stars, constitutional therapy and long-term health. This curriculum theme brings together concepts developed throughout the program into an increasingly integrated clinical approach.
Representative topics include musculoskeletal disease, endocrine disorders, autism spectrum, developmental conditions, advanced therapeutics and complex clinical case integration.
